Moving in with Mom and Dad: Multigenerational Households

We talk frequently about moving mom or dad in with us, but it works the other way too.  "In Nevada, for example, an area hit very hard by home foreclosures, multi-generational families increased 72% from 2000 to 2010, the highest growth rate by far of any state (Metlife Mature Market Institute, 2010)."

Metlife Mature Market is one of my favorite resources for obtaining current research studies and articles on aging.  This article discusses the trends of multigenerational households in America.

Emily Abel to present at INDATA Quarterly Training on Dementia/Alzheimer's and Assistive Technology

Hello,

I will be presenting Gerontechnology to assist people with dementia and first stage Alzheimer's and their caregivers during the INDATA (Indiana Assistive Technology Act) Quarterly Training to be held on Friday, April 20, 2012 in Indianapolis, Indiana.  If you cannot attend in person, but have internet access you can also join us for this training.

Easter Seals Crossroads operates the INDiana Assistive Technology Act Project, otherwise known as the INDATA Project. The purpose of the INDATA project is two-fold. The first is to get assistive technology into the hands of Hoosiers with disabilities through device demonstrations, device loans, computer recycling and alternative financing. The second goal is to provide statewide outreach educational opportunities regarding assistive technology capabilities, options and resources. To learn more about the free services of the INDATA project, go to http://www.eastersealstech.com/.

This is a free event, but registration is required. To learn more about this event and/or to register click on the following link:

Gerontechnology: What is it and How Can it Help?

What is Gerontechnology?

Gerontechnology can be defined as matching technology to health, housing, mobility, communication, and leisure and work of older people.  It is the aim of the gerontechnologist to collaborate with other disciplines to support the older adult and their caregivers through the use of technology.

How Can Gerontechnology Help?

  • Support physical, cognitive, emotional functions
  • Maintain independence
  • Accomplish routine tasks independently, safely, conveniently
  • Continue to work or volunteer as long as is desired
  • Provide ways to move, go places, get around via car or public transportation
  • Remotely monitor health
  • Increase social connectivity
  • Engage in learning, creative, and recreational activities
